In-House Teams
Instructional League (formerly ‘T-ball’)
- Grades: Currently in pre-school and Kindergarteners with limited previous experience
- Schedule: This program is scheduled for every Tuesday and Thursday in May and June. The first two weeks will be practices only. The next two weeks will be one practice and one game. The final four weeks will be two games each week. On June 9, this league will have a Jamboree up at the Lee Carlson complex. This will be a fun and festive event up at the “big kid” fields.
- Program: The basic aim of instructional ball is to introduce beginners to the game of baseball by teaching fundamental skills and rules of the game. No scores will be recorded or standings kept. We do expect to play the players at normal baseball positions and teach them how to hit, catch and throw as well as what constitutes an out or a safe hit and what counts as a run. The players would start out hitting from tees and then move on to a coach-pitched ball as they are ready. Parent instruction will be provided so you can start working with your players at home.
- Cost: $115
Rookie League (formerly ‘Coach Pitch’. Kids and coaches will use the new Louisville Slugger pitching machines)
- Grades: Kindergarteners with two years of t-ball experience or with basic throwing, catching and batting skills, all 1st graders, and 2nd graders who are new to the game.
- Schedule: This league is scheduled for every Tuesday and Thursday in May and June. The first two weeks will be practices only. The next two weeks will be one practice and one game. The final four weeks will be two games each week. On June 16, this league will have a Jamboree up at the Lee Carlson complex. This will be a fun and festive event up at the “big kid” fields.
- Program: The basic aim of the Rookie League is to teach the fundamental skills and rules of the game. The coach will pitch to each of the batters on his own team using a mechanized Louisville slugger manual pitching machine. Scores will be kept, but no records of the standings are kept. We will stress teamwork and good sportsmanship no matter the result of the game. Parent instruction will be provided so you can be building skills with your players at home.
- Cost: $135
Machine Pitch League
- Grades: 2nd graders with solid throwing, catching and batting skills, most 3rd graders, and 4th graders who are new to the game and don’t feel they’re ready for Kid Pitch level.
- Schedule: This program is scheduled for weeknights and potentially some weekends in May and June, with a season-ending tournament.
- Program: The basic aim of machine pitch is to allow more hitting and defensive plays while building on the fundamental skills and rules of the game. Machines do the pitching. In this league, outs are recorded and standings are kept. Player evaluations will take place on April 14th so that teams of equal skill levels can be achieved. The leagues follow rules essentially the same as the more familiar Little League that is played nationally.
- We are unable to have players select coaches or teammates.
- Cost: $195
This year the OBA is incorporating an in-season practice program, "Practice with the Pros", for all kid pitch and above levels. Each team will receive 4 hours of organized training performed by highly skilled trainers. The player to coach ratio will be 4:1. We increased the league fees for these levels to cover the costs.
Kid Pitch National League
- Grades: 3rd graders with strong throwing, catching and batting skills (basically tournament team-level 3rd graders), all 4th and 5th graders not ranking in the top 25-30% during evaluations on April 14-15.
- Schedule: This program starts with practices in mid-April and is scheduled for weeknights and weekends in May and June with a season ending tournament the last week June. This league is meant to provide more development opportunities for those kids not playing at a tournament team level. Players will be given more opportunities to development pitching, catching, and fielding skills.
- Program: Players begin pitching in this league. The league follows rules essentially the same as the more familiar Little League that is played nationally.
- Cost: $260
Kid Pitch American League

- Program: The league follows rules essentially the same as the more familiar Little League that is played nationally. Note that players are not required to participate on a tournament team to qualify for this league.
- Cost: $260
2012 Baseball Age Rules for Tournament Teams and Metro Teams
Ages 9-11: 2012 Tournament/Travel leagues are generally planned to be similar to 2011. Players age 9-11 can sign up for evaluations to play on a tournament team and will play in the OBA in-house league during the week, meaning that for ages 9-11 the youth will play on two separate teams if they choose to also participate on a tournament team (they may not choose to play on a travel team exclusively). Note: 9 year olds will be allowed to try out for the 10 year old tournament teams. However, they cannot take a roster position away from a 10 year old. Once all 10 year olds who wish to play on a tournament team are placed on a team, 9 year olds will be used to complete the roster or build additional teams, if needed.
Ages 12-16: Current plans are to field a second Metro/Tournament team(typically an A team) at every age level where an adequate number of players meeting a minimum skill level sign up, as determined by the OBA Board Coaches Committee. Players sign up for evaluations to play in a travel league(Metro or CRYB) If a player signs up for a Metro Team tryout and has been selected for a Metro Team they are committed to playing in that team’s weekend tournaments for the season. Those players who do not make the Metro team will play at their level in the CRYB league.
Metro/Tournament teams are different than the in-house program. The goal of the in-house program is to give all players similar playing time. The Metro/Tournament teams are based on ability and playing time is granted accordingly. However, both in-house and metro/tournament team coaches may choose to reduce a player’s game time if they are not regularly attending practices.
OBA does not guarantee that every player who desires to play tournament team ball will have a spot on a team. Additionally, OBA reserves the right to place players as needed to support league and player development.
Traveling Programs (team placement based on an evaluation process) For Ages 12 - 14
While the in-house program (particularly at the younger ages) is generally grade-based, the traveling programs are age-based. This is because the leagues in which we participate (MBT, MYAS, CRYB) are age specific.
CRYB hosts two regions, east and west. We will be participating in the east division which includes Corcoran, Delano, Mound, Rockford and other area towns (half of your son’s games will be hosted in these towns---a change of scenery!!!). The season will conclude with an end of season weekend tournament(tentatively scheduled for 21-22July) for those teams that finish in the upper-half of their divisions. The tournament will include teams from the west division which includes Glencoe, Waconia, Hutchinson, Dassel-Cokato and other area towns. The 12 year olds will play on intermediate sized fields(70’ base paths and 50’6” mounds) in a 11/12 league while the 13 and 14 years olds will play on 80’ base paths with 54’ mounds in a 13/14 league.

Tournament Teams
While the in-house programs at the younger age levels are generally grade-based, the tournament teams are age-based at all levels. This is because the tournaments in which we participate (MBT, MYAS, MSF) are age-specific.
See details on the website in the
Policies section for age rules.
Notes:
- For 9-11 year olds the fees below are in addition to the league program fees above This amount will be refunded by the OBA if the player does not qualify for a travel team.
- Tournament schedule is subject to change. Tournaments are played on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. It is expected that players who choose to play a second sport make baseball practices and games their first priority.
- If your child qualifies for and chooses to play on the Metro team for ages 12-14, he is required to also participate in the respective weekend tournaments for that age level. However, if your child would prefer not to play in the weekend tournaments, they will play in the CRYB League.
- Teams that play in weekend tournaments must qualify for state tournaments. OBA covers the entry fee (not including gate fee) of one state tournament. It is up to the coaches to decide which state tournament (if there is an option) to participate in. Some teams choose to participate in more than one state tournament---this is at the coaches discretion.
10 and 11 Year Old Tournament Teams
Tournament teams will be determined by an evaluation process, so the players who end up there should start by registering under the Kid Pitch level of play. A heavy level of commitment is demanded. Tournament teams for this age group play on an in-house team and then play on an additional Tournament Team. Choosing to play on a Tournament Team is optional and will not impact the player’s evaluation for the in-house league. The Tournament Team is meant to be a supplement to the program for those players who would like a more rigorous baseball schedule. Players are placed on teams by age (see Age Rules on the OBA website). One AA or AAA team and one (or two) A teams will be chosen, based on the number of players who sign up.
