11-U, 12-U, 13-U Tournaments
Bats can be 2 1/4" with no restrictions OR bats must be between 2 1/2" and 2 3/4"and have a -9 differential or less (i.e. 30" - 21.0 oz.). Some tournaments restrict bats greater than 2 1/4".
14-U
Bats must be 2 3/4" or smaller with a -5 differential or less
15-U
Bats must be 2 5/8"or smaller with a -3 or less
Notes: The 2 1/4 to 2 3/4" restrictions refer to the thickness of the barrel of the bat.
"Differential" refers to the difference in the bat's length minus its weight. As kids get older and stronger, the point is to restrict the use of very large but extremely light weight bats.
There are many different bat manufacturers with prices ranging from $50 to $400. Try googling "youth bat selection" for more information on choosing the right size bat. Many kids show up with brand new bats that are too heavy for them to swing. One general rule of thumb is to hold the bat and the end of the barrel with your top hand and extend it straight out the side. The player should be able to hold it there for 25-30 seconds. If they can't, the bat is too heavy and they should choose a lighter bat. If you are not sure then lighter is better.
